Understanding the Problem

Reverberation and speech clarity in learning spaces

What is reverberation time (RT60)?

RT60 is the time in seconds for sound to decay by 60 decibels after the source stops. In a classroom with an RT60 of 1.8 seconds, a teacher's word is still bouncing around the room when the next word is spoken — overlapping speech and reducing intelligibility.

Australian Standard AS/NZS 2107:2016 recommends a maximum of 0.6 seconds for general teaching spaces and 0.4–0.6 seconds for early learning environments. Many untreated Australian classrooms measure between 1.0 and 2.0 seconds.

Acoustic treatment is not soundproofing

Acoustic treatment reduces reverberation and reflected sound inside a room, making speech clearer and the space more usable. Soundproofing reduces sound transmission between separate rooms — a different product, a different installation, and a different problem.

SoundFix Acoustics provides acoustic treatment for education spaces. Acoustic ceiling panels absorb sound energy rather than reflecting it, which is why they are the most effective treatment for classroom echo.

Government Guidance

Acoustic performance in Victorian school buildings

The Victorian School Building Authority's 2026 Building Quality Standards Handbook recognises the importance of acoustic performance to the functionality of learning and education-and-care spaces. For applicable Department of Education capital projects, the Handbook requires acoustic performance to be demonstrated through onsite testing and commissioned data.

SoundFix's measure–treat–retest approach gives schools evidence they can use when evaluating an acoustic improvement project. The guidance also calls for high-quality room acoustics to support hard-of-hearing and other users.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acoustic treatment for schools — common questions

What NRC rating do I need for a classroom?+
For most classrooms, acoustic ceiling panels with a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.85 or higher are recommended. SoundFix Acoustics melamine ceiling panels achieve NRC 0.90–1.00, tested to AS ISO 354:2006. Panels with an NRC below 0.50 will not deliver sufficient absorption to reach AS/NZS 2107:2016 reverberation targets in a standard classroom volume of 200–250 cubic metres.
How much does classroom acoustic treatment cost?+
Classroom acoustic treatment typically ranges from $2,500 to $8,000 per room depending on room size, ceiling height, surface materials and required coverage. A standard 70–90 square metre primary classroom generally needs ceiling coverage across 50–70% of the ceiling area. Multi-room projects attract lower per-room pricing. SoundFix provides a written assessment and fixed-price quote for every project.
Can acoustic panels be installed during school holidays?+
SoundFix schedules most school installations during term breaks, pupil-free days and school holidays to avoid disruption to learning. A standard single-classroom installation is typically completed within one day. Scheduling is subject to assessment, project approval, location, suitability, material availability and installation capacity — a specific holiday window cannot be guaranteed at enquiry stage.
What fire rating do school acoustic panels need in Australia?+
Australian school buildings are typically classified as NCC Class 9b. Wall and ceiling lining materials must achieve Group 1 or Group 2 classification under AS ISO 9705, or meet the Spread of Flame Index and Smoke Development Index requirements of AS/NZS 1530.3. SoundFix supplies panels tested to AS ISO 9705 and AS/NZS 3837, and provides test documentation with every quotation. Compliance of a completed installation is determined by the project's certifying authority.
How many acoustic panels does a classroom need?+
The number required depends on room volume, existing surface absorption, ceiling height and target reverberation time. Most standard classrooms of 70–90 square metres require panels covering 50–70% of the ceiling area to reach the AS/NZS 2107:2016 target of 0.6 seconds RT60. SoundFix calculates the exact panel count using acoustic modelling based on measured RT60 data.
Do acoustic panels stop noise from the next classroom?+
No. Acoustic panels reduce reverberation and echo inside a room. They do not prevent sound transmitting between separate rooms. Blocking sound transmission requires soundproofing, which involves mass, isolation and sealing rather than absorption. These are two different problems with two different solutions.
Are acoustic panels suitable for kindergartens and early learning centres?+
Yes. Ceiling-mounted installation keeps panels out of reach of children. Early learning rooms have a stricter reverberation target under AS/NZS 2107:2016 of 0.4–0.6 seconds, which is why high-NRC ceiling panels are typically specified. At Panorama Heights Preschool, ceiling panel treatment reduced average RT60 from 1.40 seconds to 0.36 seconds.
What is the best acoustic solution for a school gymnasium?+
School gymnasiums are among the most acoustically challenging education spaces due to high ceilings, hard floors and large parallel surfaces. The most effective treatment is high-NRC acoustic ceiling panels distributed across the ceiling, often combined with wall panels at first-reflection points. At Kingsville Primary School this combination reduced average reverberation from 2.43 seconds to 1.06 seconds — a 56% reduction, completed in one day.
