I contacted SoundFix about fireproof acoustic shielding for a light aircraft overhaul. Geoff introduced me to a product that was used by Airbus to reduce the weight of the A380. Geoff produced fire test videos for us and supplied an excellent product at a competitive price. Our only other option was to import from the USA.

The material was very easy to work with, requiring only a razor blade to accurately cut. The springiness and structure has meant that we do not need to glue it in, further saving weight and cost.

What Acoustic Panels Do, and What They Do Not Do

Acoustic panels absorb sound inside a room. Hard surfaces like concrete, glass, timber floors and plasterboard reflect sound back into the space, which is what makes a busy office or a classroom feel loud even when nobody is shouting. Panels take that reflected energy out of the room, so speech becomes easier to follow and the general noise level drops.

Panels do not block sound moving between rooms or coming in from outside. That is soundproofing, and it is a different job involving mass, sealing and structural separation. SoundFix works on the inside of commercial buildings. We do not treat external walls, party walls or windows, and we do not take on residential jobs.

If you are not sure which one your building needs, the quickest test is where the noise comes from. Noise generated inside the room is an acoustic panel problem. Noise arriving from somewhere else is a soundproofing problem.

Do acoustic panels work?

Yes, for noise generated inside the room. Absorption reduces reverberation time, which is the measurable thing that makes a room feel loud. We take a reading before and after every installation so the change is documented rather than assumed. What panels will not do is stop noise travelling in from another room or from outside.

How long do acoustic panels last?

With normal commercial use and basic maintenance, panels last many years without losing absorption performance. They are a fixed part of the fitout rather than a consumable.

Do acoustic panels make a room hotter?

Only slightly, and in most rooms the difference is not noticeable. Panels are designed to absorb sound rather than heat, and normal ventilation handles the small insulating effect.

Do you provide soundproofing for homes or windows?

No. SoundFix specialises in indoor commercial acoustic panels for noise reduction and echo control. We do not provide soundproofing for residential homes, external walls or transmission related jobs.
