The Challenge

In a busy recreation centre, noise is part of the energy of the space. People arrive for swimming, fitness classes, sports programs and community activities, bringing conversation, movement and excitement with them. The problem begins when the building repeatedly reflects that sound instead of allowing it to fade naturally.

At Boroondara Sports Complex, the recreation space included extensive glass windows, a hard floor, solid walls and a high ceiling. These surfaces created a highly reflective acoustic environment. Voices, music, footsteps and activity could bounce between the glass, floor, walls and ceiling, producing echo and making the room feel louder than the activity alone would suggest.

This is a common challenge in gyms and leisure centres. Hard finishes are practical, durable and easy to maintain, but they provide very little sound absorption. As more people enter the room, reflected sound overlaps and conversations become more difficult to understand. Instructors or staff may need to speak more loudly, while visitors can find the atmosphere tiring or overwhelming.

The issue was not the people using the facility. It was the way the room acoustics were amplifying everyday activity. Boroondara Sports Complex needed an acoustic treatment that could reduce echo while preserving the natural light, open layout and visual connection created by the large windows.

The Solution

SoundFix Acoustics recommended a tailored treatment using ceiling acoustic panels. Treating the ceiling provided an effective way to introduce substantial sound absorption without covering the glass windows, changing the floor or reducing the functional wall space around the room.

The ceiling represented one of the largest available reflective surfaces. When sound generated within the space travelled upwards, the untreated ceiling could return that energy into the room, adding to reflections already coming from the glass, walls and flooring.
