The Challenge

In a church hall, sound needs to support many different moments: children’s activities, community gatherings, teaching, worship, music, conversation and movement. At Strathfield Anglican Church, the hall is a large, active space with hard timber flooring, tall ceilings, brick walls, windows and open reflective surfaces. These features give the room character, but they can also cause sound to bounce around the space.

When a hall like this is filled with children, families, music or group activity, the sound level can build quickly. Voices reflect from the ceiling, walls and floor, creating echo and reverberation that make the room feel louder than it should. This can affect speech clarity, comfort and communication, especially in a space used for community and children’s ministry.

The challenge was to reduce echo and improve noise control without changing the welcoming character of the hall. The solution needed to work with the existing church architecture, maintain a bright open feel and provide effective acoustic treatment for a busy multi-purpose community space.

The Solution

SoundFix Acoustics designed a combined acoustic treatment using ceiling wave baffles and acoustic wall panels. This approach was ideal because the room had multiple reflective surfaces contributing to the acoustic problem. Treating only one area would not have been enough. The ceiling and walls both needed to work together to absorb sound reflections and reduce reverberation.

The ceiling wave baffles were suspended across the hall to capture sound energy rising into the large ceiling space. Their curved, wave-like form helped soften the visual look of the ceiling while adding strong sound absorption overhead. This was especially important because ceiling reflections can be a major cause of echo in large halls.

The acoustic wall panels were installed around the room to absorb lateral sound reflections from voices, music and movement. Together, the ceiling baffles and wall panels created a more complete acoustic solution, improving comfort from multiple directions.

This project shows how acoustic ceiling panels and wall-mounted treatment can work together to create a calmer, clearer and more usable church hall.

The Installation

The installation was carefully planned around the height, layout and function of the hall. In a large church space, acoustic panel placement matters because sound does not only travel in one direction. Voices, footsteps, music and children’s activity all reflect from different surfaces. SoundFix assessed the hall as a whole and installed the ceiling wave baffles and wall panels in locations where they could make the biggest difference.

The ceiling wave baffles were suspended in rows across the upper part of the room. Their soft curved profile created a visual rhythm across the ceiling while helping to absorb sound that would otherwise continue bouncing overhead. The wall panels were placed along the side walls to reduce side reflections and help control the overall noise build-up in the hall.

The result was a practical and visually clean installation that respected the existing church environment. The white baffles blended naturally with the ceiling, while the wall panels provided additional sound absorption without overwhelming the space.
